3/17 West Duwamish Greenbelt

The Nature Consortium hosts volunteer work parties year round. Each work party begins with a short informal forest ecology workshop. During the fall/winter months we remove invasive species and maintain our site.  During the fall and winter we remove invasive species, mulch, and plant native plants and trees in the West Duwamish Greenbelt (see below for more details). Performing artists "play in the woods" during many of our work parties, and include singers, instrumentalists, and dancers.

*Volunteers must wear work clothes that can get dirty, long pants, and sturdy close-toed shoes. We work rain or shine, so please come prepared for the weather!  During the cold and wet fall/winter months we strongly suggest that volunteers not wear cotton, but instead opt for fleece, wool, and other synthetic fabrics that stay warm even when they are wet.  We also recommend packing an extra pair of clothes, a plastic bag, and a piece of cardboard or other recyclable material to separate your muddy clothes/shoes from your vehicles. Even if it doesn’t rain, some parts of the Greenbelt are still muddy.

*Tools, gloves and refreshments will be provided. Bring a full water bottle. We will have water available for refills.  Bring a bagged lunch if you require more than a small snack.

West Duwamish Greenbelt
Nature Consortium's Urban Forest Restoration Project is committed to the long-term stewardship and restoration of the West Duwamish Greenbelt. The Greenbelt is the largest remaining contiguous forest within Seattle city limits, consisting of 182 acres in park land and another 300 acres in privately owned land.  Foxes, red-legged frogs, hawks, and bald eagles are found within the Greenbelt, which encompasses the extended forest along the eastern slopes of West Seattle that is visible from I-5.  Our main restoration goal is reintroducing native conifer species to the Greenbelt, and we also focus on invasive plant removal, site maintenance and environmental education.
