Students are not only future forest stewards, they are energetic and valuable volunteers! The Green Seattle Partnership has been working on a school curriculum to educate students about the health of their forests in Seattle Parks.  Learn about the curriculum that has been put together, and about how it could be a great resource for any school groups you work with.  What if the students showed up at your site and were already trained about invasive species, why they are going to be “weeding” for a few hours, and that they are helping to make a positive impact on our forests. This curriculum will be piloted in the Spring and Fall of 2010. There may be students coming to your site soon to help out.

Senior Culminating Project Presentation

On top of the class groups, you may have been approached about doing a Senior Culminating Project with High School Seniors.  Learn what a Senior Culminating project is, and how students could work with you on your restoration site to fulfill their project requirements.  See real examples of how students have worked on their Senior Culminating projects successfully with Natural Resource Groups.  Learn how to connect students with your site, if you think it would be a good fit for a student or a small group of students.

Nicole Ricketts is a ten-year veteran of Environmental Education, spanning Washington State to involve youth and adults in Citizen Science Programs. Nicole began her work in Citizen Science with the University of Washington NatureMapping Program. During her six-year tenure with the Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, Nicole partnered with biologists to develop wildlife monitoring protocols in order to survey populations, document behavior patterns, and track migration routes for various species. In her work with the Green Seattle Partnership, Nicole is working with the Regalis Team to involve students in restoration and monitoring efforts in Seattle Urban Parks. This endeavor will also include the development of a K-12 curriculum that will support a comprehensive understanding of the importance of protecting Urban Forests.
